The International Water Resources Association (IWRA) and the Faroese Geological Survey (Jarðfeingi) recently concluded the 1st Islands Water Congress, held from 4-6 September at the Nordic House in Tórshavn, Faroe Islands. Hosted by Jarðfeingi (the Faroese Geological Survey), this flagship event provided a platform for critical insights into the distinct challenges and opportunities surrounding freshwater water management on islands. Bringing together global experts, decision-makers, and island communities from 40 countries, the Congress offered a comprehensive look into how islands can take the lead in addressing some of the world’s most pressing water issues.
Connecting Islands for Global Water Solutions
Theme: Freshwater and Islands: Administration, Collaboration and Innovation
IWRA’s 1st Islands Water Congress marked a significant milestone in addressing pressing freshwater challenges faced by island communities globally. The Congress fostered discussions and collaborations on administration, collaboration, and innovation in freshwater management on islands.
KEY CONGRESS OUTCOMES
1) Raised awareness on freshwater management in the Faroe Islands and paved the way for a policy discussion on the possible reform of the water law in the Faroe Islands;
2) An MoU signed by two governments establishing the Torshavn Dialogue on the Sustainable Management of Freshwater on Islands;
3) A Congress policy report on regulation of freshwater on islands to be published in early 2025;
4) Developed building blocks of a community of practice on freshwater management on islands, led by IWRA, that will develop close synergies with closely aligned global initiatives.
This biennial Islands Water Congress promises to be a cornerstone event in advancing sustainable water use and management, with far-reaching implications for island communities and beyond. Attendees will find ample opportunities to connect, share knowledge, and catalyse action toward water resilience in island contexts. The three-day programme will consist of diverse array of paper presentations from experts, special sessions from renowned institutions, creative cultural presentations, and esteemed keynote speakers.
